Coaching Skills Training

Structure and Content

For therapists and counsellors:

You have a choice of whether to take the modules as part of an eclectic group or as part of a peer group with other therapists and counsellors. In the latter case, we start by assuming that more of the relationship skills are already in place and spend extra time looking at how they complement and/or need to be adapted for the coaching context.

You may also opt for the one day introduction that is an intensive version of the core skills training and qualifies you for the other modules if you want to go further. This is also due to be offered in different locations as a PDD in collaboration with the BACP coaching division.

One Day Introduction to Coaching Skills

This is an intensive cut down version of the Core Skills Module suitable for those with a counselling or similar background. It will provide you with a framework and models to start using a 'coach approach' in your current work and interactions. It includes:

  • Clarifying the Coaching Context
    • What coaching is and is not
    • Acceptance AND Expectation
    • Insight AND Action
  • Intentional Communication
    • Listening to, listening with and listening for in a coaching context
    • Effective questioning for awareness, ownership and action
  • Coaching Models
    • Coaching Perspectives
    • The FORGOALS coaching model
  • Coaching Practicums

About the three modules:

We provide three 2-day professional training skills modules, aligned with the portfolio credentialing requirements of the International Coach Federation (ICF) and the Association for Coaching (AC). These can be taken separately or combined to give a total of over 60 hours of coach specific training.

We also offer a one day introduction to coaching course, which is well suited for therapists, counsellors and others with a background in the helping professions.

Some trainings are open and others are held in collaboration with various organisations and groups. Contact us if you would like to talk about organising something with you.

Coaching the SELF Factor

This module assumes that you have taken the core training or another equivalent coaching training. It is also required that you read the book, The Self Factor, beforehand.

You will learn to coach from a deeper perspective and address who and how the client is being as well as what they are doing. In this way you support them in being the authority in their life and work -- being 'the author' who re-writes both character and script. There will be a strong emphasis on coaching practice where participants coach each other on their own SELF-development. It is offered over two days, with an optional follow 12-week course supplemented by telephone conference sessions.

The module includes:

  • Consolidation of core skills
  • The 3 Part Coaching Overview Model
    • Life Foundations
    • The Self Factor
    • Projects and Goals
  • The SELF model
    • Sustaining
